Norfolk Island Tour Recap: A Relaxed Escape Full of Connection, Culture & Coastal Charm

A Firsthand Account from a Recent Traveller.

What a week! Our recent group getaway to Norfolk Island was packed with rich history, stunning scenery, warm hospitality, and plenty of laughs. From dramatic cliffside views to spontaneous singalongs and local feasts, this trip offered the perfect mix of exploration and relaxation. Here's a look at what made this island escape so memorable.

Day 1: Welcome to Norfolk Island

Our adventure began smoothly with everyone arriving on time at the airport. While the self-check-in kiosks didn’t recognise our passports, the Qantas staff were absolute stars, checking us in individually with patience and care.

After a slightly delayed flight, we touched down in paradise! The warm welcome continued at the South Pacific Resort, where the staff were fabulous - assisting with room allocations and providing a great orientation to help everyone settle in comfortably.

We also met our amazing local contact Lyndal, full of insider knowledge. The food was delicious and the resort facilities, including ramps and spacious rooms, were spot on for our group.

Day 2: Island Tales and Windy Cliffs

Today was a deep dive into Norfolk’s history and heart, led by our wonderful guide, Rachel from Baunti Tours. Born and bred on the island, Rachel was a fountain of knowledge, making every moment count even on a blustery day.

We kept cosy on the bus, but made time for scenic stops for morning and afternoon tea. A highlight? The spontaneous acoustic test at St Barnabas Church, where five members of our Probus men’s choir sang Hallelujah. The echo was spine-tingling.

That evening, we enjoyed the iconic Fish Fry perched dramatically on a cliff edge. The setting was unforgettable, though we did run into a hiccup with gluten-free catering. Rachel, a former chef, quickly jumped in to make things right, even heading into town to source a special dessert for our guests. That kind of care defined the whole trip.

Back at the resort, staff kindly set up the NRL Grand Final on the lobby TV. In true dramatic fashion, with nine minutes left, the stream paused with a “Are you still watching?” prompt and no one had the remote! Cue a hilarious scramble until a staff member saved the day with a heroic "YES!"

Day 3: Culture, Community & Laughter

After a busy start, a few guests opted for a quiet morning, while the rest headed off for the Norfolk Culture Tour and a split-group visit to Pitcairn Settlers Village.

Meanwhile, we arranged for a small group to attend the local Probus meeting the next day. A hire car helped shuttle guests into town and catered for those preferring fewer steps - flexibility was key throughout the trip.

That night’s Bounty Show & Dinner was a tight squeeze, but full of laughter and flavour. These kinds of interactive evenings really bring Norfolk’s quirky charm to life!

Day 4: From Probus to Panoramas

A busy day of shuttles, meetings, and views! After dropping off some guests at the Norfolk Probus Club, we ferried others to town, and later squeezed in a visit to the stunning Mount Pitt - a must-see, offering 360-degree views of the island.

Though tour buses can’t access Mt Pitt due to road restrictions, a hire car made the trip possible. This would be a great optional add-on for future tours.

That afternoon, Don and George led a relaxed Glass Bottom Boat ride, followed by a Progressive Dinner - a wonderful way to meet locals and sample regional fare. One stop featured handmade crafts and gifts that weren’t available in town, we’ll be sure to allow more time there next trip!

Day 5: Art, Farm Tour & a Surprise Star

A group of early birds squeezed in a visit to the Cyclorama and Art Gallery which was closed on Thursdays, so we shuffled plans. Their review? “Not to be missed.” We’ll be adding it earlier in the itinerary next time.

Next up was the Farm & Industry Tour, where time flew. Our guide Brook won everyone over with his insights, as well as his surprise appearance later that night as one of the “ghosts” in the hilarious Commandant’s Dinner Show!

Day 6: Breakfast Walk & Fond Farewells

We wrapped the tour with the popular Walking Breakfast at Captain Cook Monument. While we were originally offered a longer hike, we decided on a more accessible short botanical walk which was still scenic, but a bit too tame for some.

A few guests opted for an extra mini hike, including the incredible 90-year-old John, who plays tennis twice a week! Though he needed a breather after the uphill return, he bounced back over breakfast and was cheerful as ever. It was a reminder of the amazing spirit in this group.

After a bit of downtime, we checked in our bags and navigated the oddly intense airport security (we’re still laughing about scanners picking up “suspicious” hips and armpits).

Final Thoughts

This Norfolk Island tour was a perfect blend of history, humour, food, and flexibility. From cliffside fish frys to Probus mingling, interactive shows to surprise views, the group took everything in stride with smiles, laughter, and an appetite for new experiences.

A heartfelt thank you to Baunti Tours, South Pacific Resort, and our fabulous guides. Your dedication made all the difference.

Top Tips for Future Tours

  • Avoid walking breakfasts on flight days - too rushed for comfort.

  • Consider adding Mt Pitt and Cyclorama earlier in the itinerary.

  • Always double-check dietary needs, especially for celiac vs gluten free.

  • Build in time for browsing at local dinner stops with unique crafts.

  • Be flexible - “island time” is real, but it’s all part of the charm.
