The wonders of Sri Lanka

If golden beaches, misty mountains with giant waterfalls, mighty elephants on an open savannah or stealthy leopards all in their natural habitat is what excites you then an ancient and majestic past with the world’s best tea and warm smiles from the local people will sum up a country perfectly, it could be nowhere else but Sri Lanka.

Travels through Sri Lanka provide an array of experiences from an abundance of wildlife, to a pilgrimage, to some of the oldest city sites in the world. The smiles and hospitality of the Sri Lankan people will fill your heart with warmth and fond memories.

Despite its small size Sri Lanka is a global leader in many ways. It’s known worldwide for its precious gems, its exotic teas and cinnamon since the turn of the last century. In the past Sri Lankan cinnamon, ivory, and precious gems had been the cause for invasions from the Portuguese and Dutch, who followed the Moor traders to the country in search of the world’s best spices and riches.

Even today the country produces the world’s best cinnamon and is still one of the world’s top cinnamon exporters. However prior to the countries fame for its cinnamon, the world knew Sri Lanka for its beautiful and valuable gemstones, especially the Ceylon blue sapphires which are celebrated worldwide for their distinctive colour and luster.

Yet it is the Ceylon tea which the world identifies the country by. Introduced to the country in the 19th century by the Colonial British, Sri Lanka had held the crown for producing the world’s best tea. Although many countries have joined the world tea market, Ceylon Tea made in Sri Lanka still continues to be the favourite of tea lovers worldwide.

You can’t ignore the spectacular and diversified scenery this country offers. Sri Lanka is filled with romantic and majestic landscapes, governed by rising mountains, ancient cites, lush forests, tea plantations, ocean like tanks, and giant waterfalls, considered the lost paradise by many a globe trotter who have fallen in love with this country.

On the western coast of the country is Colombo, the capital city of the island, which displays a rich colonial heritage with a vibrant industry ready to take on the world. Travelling into the central interior of Sri Lanka takes us into the famous cultural triangle region.

The landscape changes dramatically and is different from the rest of country. Ancient cities, colourful Hindu temples and Buddhist statues litter the landscape. Despite its small size, Sri Lanka is included among the top five biodiverse hotspots in the world.
