Taste for domestic delights

Let’s get back to basics for the budget conscious traveller with three little domestic gems.

1: Our Swan Hill tour featuring the new multi-million dollar “Heartbeat of the Murray” spectacular is very popular with Probus Clubs in Victoria. Aside from the wonderful laser lights show tracing the history of the Murray right up until this day there is plenty more to see on this itinerary.

Included is a visit to the John Piccoli Garden and Sculpture tour where these works of art are sculptured from thousands of spanners and John’s creative mind (none of the designs have written drawings). You will be mesmerised by the variety on display in a vast garden setting.

The Pioneer Settlement will bring back memories for you of our historical past, as will a relaxing river boat cruise on the PS Pyap on the Murray. Top this off with a tour of the magnificent Murray Downs Homestead and hear some unique tales from the past from owner Digby Lewis and wife Bev. A visit to Lake Boga is a fascinating stop to check out the Flying Boat museum from the Second World War period. There are also options to extend your tour onto Mildura and up to Broken Hill & White Cliffs.

Other affordable destinations can be found interstate.
2: Many of our groups head across to Victor Harbour, The Coorong & Kangaroo Island where they experience many delights. Flight, Coach or Rail packages available.

After flying across to Adelaide we coach through an evolving vista of beautiful parklands, bush hillsides and magnificent vineyards, before winding down to the glorious blue waters of Victor Harbour. Boarding the ‘Cockle Train’, a line dating back to 1887, you venture towards the historic wharf at Goolwa where a 4 hour boat tour explores the Coorong and travellers discover how the fresh and sea water are kept separated. During this great trip the cape barren geese, tern, pelican and many other species are seen flocking in this wonderful sanctuary. It is even possible to have one foot in the Murray River and one in the sea, a special experience for many.

From Port Jervis a ferry transports travellers to Kangaroo Island where, following a very warm welcome, the many delights which include sheep milking, visiting a koala sanctuary, tasting honey and honey ice cream at Clifford’s, seeing eucalyptus oil produced and walking among the seals on the beach at Seal Bay. An absolute highlight is visiting the spectacular boulders ‘Remarkable Rocks’, formations unlike any others and a photographer’s delight. An excellent destination encompassing amazing scenery, spectacular ocean views and excellent accommodation.

3: The Hawkesbury region is another great, affordable destination and one of New South Wales’ best kept secrets. It is one of the earliest colonial settlements in Australia with many of the area’s original buildings surviving from that era, creating a “time capsule” of Australian Colonial History.

One of the highlights is to experience the World heritage listed Convict Trail. A visit to the historic village of St Albans is also a reminder of how life used to be when settlers, pioneers and emancipated convicts travelled up river to scratch out a living on the river flats. Of course, a visit to the oldest pub in Australia is also a must – The Settlers Arms, built in 1836.

To gain another perspective of the magnificent Hawkesbury is of course to take a boat ride along its meandering path. Start the day with a visit to the setting of Kate Grenville’s renowned historic novel, the Secret River, before arriving at Brooklyn where you will board the Riverboat Postman, Australia’s last operating mail boat.

Other attractions included are a visit to the Ferry Artists Gallery, Tizzana Winery, The Guide Dogs of NSW where it is bound to bring a smile to everyone’s face, and also the Canoelands Orchard Honey, and Tobruk Sheep Station. The hilarious themed Convict dinner at Riverbend Restaurant will have everyone up and dancing to the sound of the Bellbird Bush Band.
