Northern Arctic Wonderland Adventure

I have never heard “WOW” said so many times on any tour, as I did on our recent Northern Arctic Wonderland adventure taking in Norway, Finland and Estonia.

From cruising the coast of Norway and seeing the Northern Lights, to dog sledding and ice fishing in Finland, we were surprised at every turn.

Our journey started in Oslo where we saw up close how scary and high the Holmenkollen Olympic Ski jump is, then we visited the famous Vigeland Sculpture Park, an amazing timeless open air exhibition of people and the circle of life.

From Oslo we headed off on a scenic train journey, taking in the Norway in a Nutshell tour, stopping off to view frozen waterfalls, sail through an ice float on the narrowest fjord in Europe and spend a night in the Fleischers Hotel in Voss, a popular holiday destination for Royalty throughout the years.

We then made our way through beautiful valleys and mountains to Bergen, a colourful city full of history, beautiful old buildings and a cog wheel train that takes us to a magical viewing area above the city.

It was from Bergen that we set sail on our Hurtigruten ship for a memorable cruise through fjords that wind their way between mountains dotted with colourful villages. We got to explore villages along the way as the ship carried out the important role of delivering supplies and mail to these isolated communities.

Along the way there were numerous opportunities for optional tours whilst the ship was in port. Some of our group chose to do the Viking feast which saw us eating a delicious lamb meal with a knife in the traditional Viking manner in a long house restored to true dimensions.

We crossed the Arctic Circle with an on-board celebration and topped off our cruise by witnessing the magical Northern Lights.

Once back on land we headed to Saariselka to stay at a magnificent Santa’s hotel ski resort where the “WOWs” started all over again. It was here that we headed off through the breathtaking scenery of Finland on a safari with 5 dogs per sled, taking us on an exhilarating journey that was an absolute highlight of our tour.

I have never witnessed so many smiles and exclamations of delight as I did on this adventure.

The following day saw us return to our childhood when we visited Santa’s village in Finnish Lapland. We were all in awe meeting the REAL Santa, an enormous man that chatted to us about our grandchildren and Australia. We visited his workshop and village, sending off postcards and enjoying a reindeer sleigh ride through the snow and of course buying some souvenirs from this famous village.

The next day brought more new adventures as we travelled to Sinetta, where we not only got to stay in a unique glass-topped, heated igloo, but we also toured the ice hotel, stopping to enjoy a drink in an ice glass whilst sitting on an ice seat at an ice table.

Next stop, Rovaniemi and another amazing Santa hotel with more optional adventures to enjoy. Some chose to visit the Arctic Zoo whilst the majority chose another bucket list adventure of ice fishing. This involved riding snow mobiles through the beautiful forest to a frozen lake, drilling holes in the snow and trying our luck with a foot long fishing rod. Fortunately we had dinner arranged as we had no luck fishing for a meal.

We then headed off to Helsinki by train and a ferry ride to Tallinn in Estonia for a guided tour of this medieval city and its highlights.

This whole tour through nature’s wonderland was the adventure of a lifetime we will all talk about for years to come.

Experience this magical Northern Arctic Wonderland on our January 25 2018 departure.
