Northern Arctic Adventure

Forty years working in tourism….but I had never experienced anything quite like this!

Leaving Melbourne in the middle of summer to visit winter on the other side of the earth to take on trains, planes and automobiles.

You can’t be serious? Well this is exactly what our Probus group did and it was one of the best tours of my life and for others in our group.

Nothing prepared me for the magnificence and a spellbinding assault on the senses on our recent journey to Norway, Finland and Estonia. The scenery was out of this world with clear blue skies and stunning sunsets. It’s a photographer’s paradise.

Concerns about being cold was never an issue. Take plenty of layers and good footwear then it is not a problem. In fact, inside hotels, restaurants and even during our igloo stay it was always toasty warm.

We started our journey in the beautiful city of Oslo in Norway. The first thing we noticed was the abundance of electric cars, they want to phase out petrol and diesel cars within five years. A visit to the Holmenkollen Ski Jump and guided tour around the magnificent Vigeland Sculpture Park was a great way to start the tour.

A ride on the famous Flam Railway introduced us to the wonderful vistas of country Norway before a relaxing ferry ride and transfer to the beautiful Fleischers Hotel in Voss.

We then enjoyed a few nights in the wonderful city of Bergen including a cable car ride to the top of the mountain overlooking the city. We enjoyed a great meal at one of the local restaurants and soaked up the local sights which included the most amazing fish market I have ever seen. The food in Norway is first class.

For a change of pace, we commenced our six-night cruise on board our Hurtigruten ship to a variety of fjord coastal villages as we headed north. It’s hard to believe the scenery could get any better but it did. Being part of a voyage, which delivered mail and supplies to isolated communities was a great way to see this part of the world.

All of us enjoyed a number of optional shore excursions which is a must if you want to get a sense of what the country is all about. A range of tours was enjoyed including climbing a mountain, meeting the Vikings, dog sledding (that gets a wow tick) fishing villages and the North Cape to name a few.

We were treated to a spectacular showing of the Northern Lights during the northern part of our cruise. We were starting to think we were very blessed…

We then ventured into neighbouring Finland including a quick stop at the Russian border and the spectacular scenery continued. From the Santa’s Hotel in Saariselka on a brilliant clear day we had the pleasure of being pulled buy a fleet of Reindeer through snow and forests – amazing.

A stay in Sinetta in glass igloos was unique as was the amazing carvings and rooms in the ice hotel. Did I mention the ice bar and ice fishing?

We really enjoyed the Ranua Wildlife Park near Rovaniemi – close up views of polar bears, all sort of owls, an arctic wolf and wolverines and plenty of other wildlife was dramatic to say the least.

Heading south to Helsinki we sailed on a very large ferry to the beautiful capital of Tallinn, Estonia. A great guide showed us the highlights on a walking tour visiting unique and ancient churches, paved roadways in one the best preserved medieval towns in the world. Sadly, we returned on the ferry back to Helsinki for a grand farewell dinner in a unique local restaurant. A spectacular lifetime experience Bucket List – Tick!
